Woodchurch Bonfire 2026

'You Can Lower Our Fire, But Not Our Spirit'

Woodchurch Estate Bonfire Night | 5 November 2026

Some events are about much more than what happens on the night.
This is one of them.

Every year, the Woodchurch community comes together to create one of the largest community-built bonfires in the area. It's a huge undertaking, involving time, effort, dedication and an enormous amount of local pride.

But this bonfire means more than just a spectacular display. It represents a community coming together to protect something that belongs to them.

Last year, amid concerns and threats that the bonfire would be removed, the team behind its construction made the decision to light it early. Having photographed that moment, I was keen to return this year and document the build-up, the people behind it and the event itself.

When I arrived, I spoke to some of the lads keeping watch over the bonfire. They told me they sleep there overnight to protect it. That small detail said so much about the commitment and pride invested in this event.

This year, the community raised an incredible £7,000 to bring the event together. Food vendors, music, a huge crowd and a spectacular firework display created an atmosphere that was every bit as impressive as the bonfire itself.

Standing proudly on the structure was a flag bearing the words:

"Woodchurch Estate, you can lower our fire, but not our spirit!"

For me, that message captured the entire evening.

Bonfire Night has always meant a lot to me, but photographing this event reminded me that its significance can reach far beyond the flames and fireworks. It's about belonging, shared experiences, resilience and the people who come together to make something happen.

These photographs are a celebration of that community spirit, and of the people who keep it burning.
